Mission Statement

In the Fine Arts Department students gain advanced theoretical, performance, and production competencies for careers as educators and practitioners in the fine arts, music and foreign languages, as well as further study for advanced degrees. Successful students will graduate with a baccalaureate degree in Visual Arts or Music and a certification to teach (P-12) Visual Art, Instrumental Music or Vocal/Choral Music. Many successful graduates will go on to teach, while others will become accomplished in the music industry, arts administration, media production, design, international relations, business, and as performers and creatives. The professional applications of what you will learn in our department are almost endless!Ìý

The interdisciplinary Fine Arts Department offers a broad liberal arts degree program, combining general education with studies in pedagogy and the practice of art and music – primarily ones the US State Department deems strategically important. To earn the degree and teaching certification, students majoring in this department will fulfill the College’s general education requirements, the Division of Education’s requirements, and major requirements, including a capstone exhibition or recital and thesis. Also, the State of Alabama requires students to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 to qualify for teacher certification.

    The main job of the A&R Director is to find new artists to sign to the label. He or she will match the new signee toÌýproducers,Ìýsongwriters,ÌýphotographersÌýand other music industry professionals to create the whole package.

    A promoter manages the planning, preparation, promotion and execution of music shows. Promoters may work at specific venues or for a specific act or event. These duties include dealing with the city where the festival will be held to secure the necessary permits and building relationships with key companies in the community. On the festival grounds, the Director manages the location and the employees, oversees setup and breakdown, deals with contractors, and creates materials such as maps and signage. They are in charge of setting up on-site offices, maintaining relationships with food, liquor, and merchandise vendors and coordinating festival staffing. They also ensure the festival receives adequate insurance coverage, and work with other top-level execs to project potential income and risks for the event.
